Getting your driver’s license in California is an exciting milestone. At Advantage Driving School, we help students navigate the state’s requirements with confidence. Here’s what you need to know about behind-the-wheel training.
Requirements for Drivers Under 18
California requires teen drivers to complete two types of training:
Professional Behind-the-Wheel Training
6 hours of instruction with a DMV-licensed driving instructor
Must be completed at a state-approved driving school
Covers city and highway driving in various conditions
Supervised Practice Hours
50 hours of practice with a parent, guardian, or adult 25+
10 hours must be nighttime driving (sunset to sunrise)
Parent/guardian must verify completion
Before You Start Training
Students must first:
Complete 30 hours of driver education
Pass the DMV written test and obtain a learner’s permit
Hold the permit for at least 6 months before taking the driving test
What You’ll Learn
At Advantage Driving School, our behind-the-wheel training covers:
Vehicle operation and control
Lane changes, merging, and intersection navigation
Defensive driving and hazard recognition
Parking (parallel, perpendicular, and angle)

For Adult Drivers (18+)
Professional training isn’t required for adults, but many choose lessons to build confidence, learn proper techniques, and prepare for the driving test.
