Behind-the-Wheel Training Requirements in California

Requirements for Drivers Under 18 Teen taking driving lessons

California requires teen drivers to complete two types of training:

Professional Behind-the-Wheel Training

  • 6 hours of instruction with a DMV-licensed driving instructor
  • Must be completed at a state-approved driving school
  • Covers city and highway driving in various conditions

Supervised Practice Hours

  • 50 hours of practice with a parent, guardian, or adult 25+
  • 10 hours must be nighttime driving (sunset to sunrise)
  • Parent/guardian must verify completion

Before You Start Training

Students must first:

  • Complete 30 hours of driver education
  • Pass the DMV written test and obtain a learner’s permit
  • Hold the permit for at least 6 months before taking the driving test
